| Listening
by Daniel J. Dyman, Ed.D.
Listening is the foremost communication skill. It is an imperative, one half of any communication event. In whatever endeavor, for example business or school, it is essential to discern what is being declared.
If listening is distinguished from hearing, an anatomical/physiological function clarity may be achieved. Listening in contrast is a mind-dependent process of translation and interpretation ideally matching up with the spoken word. The hearing of a word is much different than to have listened than to have accomplished a synonymous realization.
Consequently, “I hear you” is not the same as “I’m listening to what you are saying.” Some may consider that a kind of double entendre but it is not. The two are not equivalent. The one is passive while the other is active or attending.
Know that the job of the listener is to mentally take in the audible sounds / message without a thought that might otherwise interfere.
