| Respect
by Daniel J. Dyman, Ed.D.
Respect is a measure of admiration, acknowledgement in proportion to the nature and level of achievement.
Actions, commitments, and performance as seen in accomplishment by way of resolve deserve or earn respect.
Respect is a reward. It is contingent upon behavior and limited by the capacity of the beholder. Externally applied, it is commendable to be respected.
It may be applause given ostentatiously a salvo with fanfare. Rightly, it can be granted or self proclaimed with pompousness or it may be a reserved quiet recognition.
Certainly, respect can be elevating and satisfying. It may even bolster self-image, confidence and conviction of purpose. Noble pride may emerge.
However, respect is not to be confused with reverence that is inherent in the being of every individual. Thus, reverence is an intrinsic quality. It is conferred regard but not earned as given by one to another.
Reverence assures all of the parameters and aspects of personal identity. It means allowing others to have their needed space without question or reservation. It enables respected achievement and fulfillment.
