| Communication
by Daniel J. Dyman, Ed.D.
According to Winston Churchill, “The difference between mere management and leadership is communication.”
However, not all communication is about taking on responsibility or making a statement, a point as in a debate of matters. It may be sharing an idea, a thought or a feeling in conversation.
Be that as it may, communication is a give and take interrelationship that requires forethought coupled with responsiveness.
On the give end words must be chosen including a logical presentation structure that begins with some comprehensible common ground, a framework of reference.
Always, in speaking, be simple rather than complex, perplexing, or convoluted so as to set up a circumstance of obfuscation. Consequently, set up to be understandable. Begin at the beginning. Start with the topic sentence, what you want to tell them. Then, clearly tell them. Then tell them what you told them as in a speech or in a classroom, the conventional summary is only for a speech or classroom.
Alternately, those on the receiving end of communication must be intensively receptive with interest.
The role of the listener is as important as that of the one in conversation. The listener must provide the needed attention to extract the appropriate thought from the words that make up the sentences, the totality of the spoken presentation.
