| Taking Initiative
by Daniel J. Dyman, Ed.D.
Taking initiative requires a decision to do what needs to be done in the pursuit of desired outcomes rather than waiting without effort for guiding events to transpire.
It requires self-belief, choice, and courage that collectively enable progress. Essential is the need to look forward with confidence in personal decisions. It is about following inclinations.
Taking initiative may be a fundamental quality of leadership in general but it is a bottom-line attribute in particular for self-direction and independence. Know that you cannot leave home without it. Appropriately, “A ship is safe in harbor, but that`s not what ships are for.” William G. T. Shedd
Let self-direction become a guiding light. Develop the self-assurance focused to achieve noble goals. Taking initiative is a step in the right direction en route to success, personal satisfaction and well-being. The exclamation, “I did it!” becomes fitting.
