| Stress shows up when you feel out of control. When there is a mismatch between expectations and results as you see them, and when you become confused with your situation, or frustrated in your advance to achieve your goals. Stress occurs when you become overwhelmed by unending activity.
You can deal with stress in a variety of ways. The key is self-discipline. You must decide on a stress management program and then live up to your commitment and follow through. Regular weekly exercise and recreation are essential. Vigorous exercise for 15 minutes to 30 minutes two or three times per week, shifts body chemistry by “burning off” stored up energy. Recreation that involves either a social activity or involvement with a hobby is helpful in changing your mental pace. Both exercise and recreation serve as diversions from the rigorous mental effort that is extended in reaching your goals.
In addition, you should set aside some time each day for wholesome laughter. Indeed, laughter may be the best medicine. Make it a regular part of your stress control diet. Everybody know that a good laugh just makes you feel better and research shows that regular laughter can shorten illness recovery time and may even reduce the associated pain. So, regularly watch a comedy show and frequently hunt out the funny stuff in newspapers and magazines.
Because exercise, recreation, and laughter can help you keep a steady emotional state, you should faithfully reserve time for them on you calendar. In your effort to cope with stress, you should never feel as though these outlets are distractions from the achievement of your goals. Rather, they are essentials and you should think of them as such. After time off for exercise, recreation, and laughter, you will be able to return to your work with a renewed spirit and more than likely, you will work more enthusiastically toward the achievement of your goals.
Everyday, at a precise time, mid morning and mid afternoon, 10 minutes should be set aside for relaxation and absolute quiet. No sounds and no thoughts. As you sit in a comfortable chair, try to block everything out of your mind. Be still and let your mind go blank. You can assist yourself in accomplishing this mental stillness by focusing on your breathing. Focus on the slow rhythmic movement of air moving in and out of your body. With practice you will be able to achieve moments of inner peace which will serve as an emotional refreshment.
Whatever you feeling, stress may be most effectively controlled by recognizing your true worth and by living within yourself, by striving for a balance between your goals and talents, by managing time smartly, and by reflecting upon the accomplishments of each day. For yourself, always emphasize the positive of each of your achievements. In addition, spend so much time on the improvement of yourself that you have no time to be concerned about anything else. Do your best, accept your best, and then go one in the fulfillment of your future.
